B. C. Mandarin Speech Contest, 2001

David Lam Centre for International Communication, Simon Fraser University (SFU) at Harbour Centre and Sino-Canada Education Association (CCEDU) will sponsor a B. C. Mandarin Speech Contest on March 24, 2001 at Simon Fraser University at Harbour Centre.

This event is aimed at promoting cross-cultural communication, the interest in learning Chinese and recognizing achievements among British Columbia residents learning Mandarin.

Topic: An Aspect of Chinese Culture

The contest consists of three categories:

　　(1) Non-native speakers;
　　(2) Mandarin as heritage language speakers; and
　　(3) Special group (Those under 16 years old and speak Mandarin as or almost as a first language).

Participants will be judged by their pronunciation, grammar and choice of words, content and delivery during the pre-contest and contest.

§ Pre-contest screening session:

7 final participants will be chosen for each category; the length of each speech is 3 minutes.

Time and date: 1: 00pm - 5: 00pm, Saturday, March 17, 2001

§ Contest:

Time and date: 1: 00pm - 5: 00pm, Saturday, March 24, 2001

Length: The length of each speech is 5 minutes.

Place: SFU at Harbour Centre (Same as above).

Prizes and awards:

　　(1) Every contestant will receive a certificate of participation;
　　(2) Every participant for the final contest will receive a gift (except first, second and 　　　　third prize recipients);
　　(3) First prize for the first category: One return ticket from Vancouver to China;
　　(4) First prize for the second category: one year tuition, room and board to study 　　　　Chinese in China;
　　(5) First prize for the third category: A special prize;
　　(6) Second and third of each category will receive a substantial gift.
